Winner of the 1997 Eisner Comic Industry Award for best anthology and best short story ('Heroes' by Archie Goodwin and Gary Gianni) and the winner of the 1998 Harvey Award for best Graphic Album. The art work in this book is from a number of top comic artists. It is all very top-notch. The entire book is all in black and white making the art even more unique. Some of the Batman representations are rather scratchy and raw but overall we enjoyed all of the artistic depictions of The Batman. This book is very different from anything else out there... except Volume 2 We specifically enjoyed seeing how each artists portrays the Dark Knight in their own unique style. Overall we thought this was an excellent graphic novel with a uniqued format: acquiring the comic industry's biggest writers and challenging them to come up with their own interpretations of Batman. Coinsiding this with some of the best artists in the industry to depict The Batman in a Black and White format. And to top it off get guys like Frank Miller (Sin City) and Jim Lee (Batman: Hush) to draw the covers and you then have an instant recipe for success. This is a highly suggested read for any Batman enthusiast! Presented in stark black-and-white tones that all too easily represent Batman's worldview comes this collection of the Darknight Detective's hardboiled adventures. With stories and art by a stellar line-up of comic industry creators including Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN) Joe Kubert (TOR) Frank Miller (THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS RONIN) Jim Lee (WILDCATS BATMAN) and others it's not surprising that this collection was awarded the comic industry's prestigious Eisner Award for excellence.
