The story opens with Batman rescuing a young boy from the clutches of Killer Croc a villain Batman knows who doesn't isn't usually known for pulling off such complicated kidnappings. Batman rescues the boy but his bat-line is cut in midflight while pursuing Catwoman sending him plummeting to the streets below rendering him unconscious. He recovers with the help of a childhood friend Tommy Elliot from Bruce's past who happens to be a brilliant surgeon. Batman traces the leads to find out who is behind the kidnapping which results in becoming a very minor act compared to what is really happening. What Batman finds is that some unknown villain has a vendetta against Bruce Wayne/Batman and is masterminding an extremely complicated plot to destroy him a piece at a time by going after the people he cares about. The story is intriguing and Jim Lee's art work is masterful! This story arc has become a milestone in the Batman universe and is a must have for all further reading.
