Format: Soft cover 172 pages Full color Writer: Len Wein / George Perez Cover Artist: George Perez Penciller: Geworge Perez Inker: Bruce Pattersons Letterer: John Costanza / L.S. MacIntosh Colorist: Tatjana Wood Editor: Karen Berger Published: Compiled 2004 DC Comics This is the second of a planned four volumes collecting the first two years of the popular George Perez Wonder Woman run from the 1980s. The first edition collected issues No. 1-7 which gave Wonder Woman an updated origin and a new beginning at a time when DC Comics was busy revamping the majority of its most popular heroes such as Superman and Batman. Perezs Wonder Woman relied heavily on the Greek mythology which spawned the Amazons female warriors who raised Princess Diana the youngster who becomes Wonder Woman to the rest of the world. Perez delved into Greek mythology in a manner similar to Walt Simonsons 1980s Thor placed a renewed emphasis on Norse mythology. In the first major story arc reprinted in the first volume of this series Perez created a Wonder Woman tale hinging upon the warmongering madness of Ares the Greek god of war. In Challenge of the Gods Perez continues the Greek connection. In this volume among other stories and characters Zeus the leader of the Greek gods challenges Wonder Woman to a contest designed to test not only her worth but the worth of the Amazons. Whether a regular Wonder Woman reader or not George Perez whose most famed work was probably on The Avengers of the 1970s and Teen Titans is a master whose writing and illustrating pens remain fascinating. NOTE: This volume is appropriate for most readers.
